The Dhanush project was started to overcome the problem of importing howitzer guns.
The first versions of Dhanush, came out better by 20 percent in terms of performance attributes like range, accuracy, consistency, low and high angle of fire and shoot-and-scoot ability as compared to the Haubits FH77.
Trials began in July 2016 and the Indian Army after a few years of trials and redesign, has placed an order of 114 Units.
The main issues the Howitzer encountered was the shell hitting the muzzle brake. A redesign of the barrel was undertaken to widen the barrel. However, it was later found that the fault was with the shell. Large scale trials were conducted in the desert regions and icy glaciers of the Himalayas.
The gun was officially inducted by the army in April 2019.
93 Field Regiment becoming one of the first units to be armed with this gun and had the honor to participate in the 71st Republic Day Parade and Army Day parade in 2020 with its new equipment.
