With the aging Soviet-era BMPs and APCs in service with the Indian Army, it was felt to replace this with a modern state of the art, IPMV – Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle. The TATA Kestrel, Armored personnel carrier family developed by Tata Advance Systems Limited and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Demonstrated and shown in 2014.
In October 2019, the Indian Defence ministry cleared it for production and export to friendly nations. 200 Kestrels are planned to be inducted by the Indian Army
